Samsung’s latest announcement should have everyone excited about future Galaxy phones

Samsung has unveiled the world’s first UFS 5.0 storage chip, and it could give future Galaxy phones a serious speed upgrade.

According to Samsung, its new UFS 5.0 storage can reach sequential read speeds of up to 10.8GB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 9.5GB/s. That is more than twice as fast as UFS 4.1, which is already used in some high-end smartphones.

In simple terms, faster storage can help phones open apps quicker, move large files faster, as well as handle demanding on-device AI tasks with fewer slowdowns. It may not sound as exciting as a new camera sensor or brighter display, but it can still make a phone noticeably faster in daily use.

That could be especially important for Samsung’s future Galaxy phones. The new storage could make its way into future Samsung flagships, and the Galaxy S27 series is already being tipped as a possible candidate.

In an X post, leaker Ice Universe said Samsung’s Exynos 2700 could support UFS 5.0. If that turns out to be accurate, some Galaxy S27 models could benefit from the faster storage, although Samsung has not confirmed whether the Galaxy S27 will use UFS 5.0 just yet.

Exynos 2600 already shows that Samsung is making a major bet on on-device AI. Following this direction, I believe Exynos 2700 will support both UFS 5.0 and LPDDR6, while bringing another significant NPU upgrade to handle much larger AI models locally.

Samsung says it plans to begin mass production of UFS 5.0 in the fourth quarter of 2026, with capacities of up to 1TB. That timing could make UFS 5.0 a realistic option for Samsung’s next major Galaxy S launch.

If the Galaxy S27 does get UFS 5.0, it could give Samsung a useful performance advantage, especially as phones rely more heavily on AI features, large apps, and high-resolution media. It may not grab headlines like a new camera or display, but faster storage could still be one of the more meaningful upgrades.
