Apple’s clever square selfie camera sensor might not stay exclusive to the iPhone for much longer.

A new leak suggests Android phone makers, possibly Oppo, are testing a similar front-facing camera setup. In addition, it could come with a massive resolution boost too.

According to well-known leaker Digital Chat Station, at least one Android manufacturer is experimenting with a square image sensor for the selfie camera. This is similar to the one used on the iPhone 17 lineup, reportedly supporting dynamic framing features that automatically keep users centred in the shot, as well as allowing users to take Portrait-style shots in landscape orientation, and vice versa.

The Android version could go even further on the hardware side. The leak claims the prototype device is using a 100MP front camera sensor, far beyond the iPhone 17’s 18MP setup. That extra resolution would likely give the phone more flexibility for digital cropping and motion tracking without losing image quality.

While the leak doesn’t explicitly name Oppo, hints in the original Weibo post strongly point toward the company. If true, the feature could appear in a future flagship such as the Oppo Find X10 Pro, but there’s also a chance it may not arrive until the next generation or a later Ultra model.

At the moment, no other Android brands, including Samsung, are rumoured to be working on a similar camera system.

Oppo borrowing ideas from Apple wouldn’t exactly be new territory, but this is one feature that genuinely makes sense to copy. As smartphone cameras improve, smarter framing and more flexible front-facing sensors arguably matter more than simply cramming in another megapixel boost.
