The iPhone 18 Pro may bring the Dynamic Island change users have wanted

The iPhone’s Dynamic Island might finally be getting smaller if the latest iPhone 18 Pro leak is anything to go by.

New alleged CAD renders of Apple’s upcoming flagship have surfaced online showing what appears to be a noticeably slimmer Dynamic Island on the front of the device. X user @earlyappleleaks shared the images and claimed the schematics confirm that Apple is reducing the size of the cutout on the iPhone 18 Pro.

While readers should take CAD leaks with a healthy dose of scepticism, accessory makers often base them on technical schematics shared ahead of launch. If they are accurate, this could be the clearest sign yet that Apple may finally be shrinking one of the iPhone’s most divisive design elements.

The smaller cutout is reportedly tied to Apple moving more of the Face ID system underneath the display. Earlier prototype leaks from the same source appeared to show an under-display Face ID sensor that would allow Apple to reduce the amount of visible hardware sitting at the top of the screen.

That said, the rumours around the Dynamic Island have been all over the place over the last year. Some earlier reports suggested Apple could ditch it entirely in favour of a simple hole-punch camera design, while others claimed the feature would stick around for several more generations.

More recent leaks point somewhere in the middle. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and several well-known Chinese leakers have suggested the iPhone 18 Pro will keep the Dynamic Island. However, they say Apple will trim it down rather than remove it completely.

There’s also reason to be cautious. Similar rumours claimed the iPhone 17 Pro would feature a smaller Dynamic Island, but the final hardware ended up looking virtually unchanged. In addition, Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station has even suggested Apple may delay the redesign until the iPhone 19.

Still, with Apple expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro later this year alongside its long-rumoured foldable iPhone, speculation around the company’s next big design shift is only going to ramp up. After three years of the same Dynamic Island design, even a subtle reduction could end up being one of the most noticeable upgrades for everyday users.
