iPhone Ultra dummy video showcases a foldable thinner than the iPhone Air

A new hands-on video of an iPhone Ultra (or Fold) dummy unit is giving us one of the clearest looks yet at Apple’s rumoured foldable. If it’s accurate, it could be surprisingly thin when opened.

Shared by MaxTech, the design model suggests Apple’s first foldable would measure around 11mm when folded, making it chunkier in the pocket than a standard iPhone.

Unfold it, though, and things get more interesting. The device reportedly slims down to just 5. 5mm, which would make it even thinner than the iPhone Air’s 5.6mm profile – though still far from what you’ll get from the likes of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Honor Magic V3.

The overall shape leans closer to a compact phone when closed, which is said to be shorter than an iPhone 17 Pro Max, and opens into something more like a mini tablet. The internal display is roughly as wide as a Pro Max, but noticeably taller at around 111.5mm. This puts it in iPad mini territory, just with slimmer bezels.

That thin design does come with some trade-offs. The dummy unit shows a large, Pixel-style camera bump that sticks out prominently. This suggests that Apple may prioritise camera hardware even on its first foldable. There are also a few unusual hardware choices. Notably, volume buttons appear to be placed on the top edge, while the Camera Control button remains, just repositioned lower for easier reach.

Another notable detail is the return of Touch ID, at least on this design model. That would mark a shift away from Face ID for this particular form factor. However, it’s not clear how final that decision is.

Audio could also get a tweak. The speakers are positioned diagonally across the device when unfolded. This may help create a more balanced stereo effect regardless of orientation. It is a small but thoughtful touch if it makes it to production.

Of course, this is still based on a dummy unit rather than a finished product. That said, MaxTech has previously handled early design models that closely matched final iPhone releases, lending some credibility to the leak.

Apple isn’t expected to launch its foldable just yet, with current rumours pointing to a debut alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup in September. Still, if this design holds, Apple’s take on a foldable could be thinner and a bit more unconventional than expected.
