Apple’s next major iPhone software update could finally bring a feature that larger-screen iPhone users have been waiting years to see.
According to a new leak, iOS 27 may introduce a split-screen multitasking system that lets two apps run side by side, bringing the iPhone experience closer to what Apple already offers on the iPad.
The reported feature is said to use a “Parallel View” system that automatically adapts apps without requiring developers to redesign them. While the name itself appears to reference a similar feature found in Huawei’s HarmonyOS, the underlying idea is familiar territory for Apple. For example, iPadOS has long handled landscape layouts and multi-window interfaces at the system level. However, iPhones have largely remained tied to single-app views regardless of screen size.
The timing of the rumour is notable because it aligns with growing expectations that Apple is preparing a foldable iPhone. Previous reports have suggested the device could feature a 7.8-inch internal display, which would create a challenge for software originally designed around the tall, narrow screens of traditional iPhones.
Without some form of app adaptation, many existing iPhone apps would simply scale up to fill the larger display. This could potentially leave a lot of unused space. A split-screen interface would offer a more practical solution. It would allow users to browse the web while messaging, manage email alongside documents, or use navigation and media apps simultaneously.
The latest leak also corroborates earlier reporting by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. He previously claimed Apple was working on an iPad-like multitasking experience for its foldable device. That report suggested supported apps could feature side-by-side layouts and navigation panels similar to those already found on the iPad.
If Apple does introduce the feature, it would represent one of the biggest productivity-focused additions to iOS in years. While Android phones and foldables have offered split-screen multitasking for some time, Apple has generally prioritised simplicity on the iPhone over advanced window management features.
Of course, there’s still a fair amount of uncertainty. Apple has not officially confirmed the feature, and the company could reserve it exclusively for a foldable iPhone.
With WWDC 2026 kicking off in under a week’s time, we may not have to wait long to find out. If the rumours are accurate, Apple’s next software update could be laying the groundwork for a much bigger change in how iPhones are used.
