A new Google Home facial recognition update, rolling out beginning June 23, improves how Nest and other Google smart home cameras recognize people. The update expands the Familiar Faces feature so people you’ve tagged can be identified even when their faces aren’t fully visible.
What’s changing in Google Home facial recognition
- Identification beyond faces: Google will use additional non-biometric signals — such as body size and clothing color — to help identify people in your Familiar Faces library when their faces are obscured.
- Automatic image updates: The Familiar Faces library will begin refreshing with more recent images of household members, reducing notifications based on outdated photos.
- Richer AI video descriptions: AI-generated event notes can now identify specific sounds (for example: dogs barking, alarms, footsteps) and include them in the event description, even if the sound originated off-camera.
Why this matters
These changes should cut down on false or confusing alerts — like misidentified people or descriptions of events that didn’t happen. Better recognition from clothing and body cues plus fresher reference photos means more accurate notifications and event logs for your smart home cameras.
Privacy and control
Google describes the new cues as “non-biometric signals.” If you want to review or manage Familiar Faces settings, see Google’s support page for details on how Familiar Faces works and how to control it in the Google Home app: Google Support — Familiar Faces.
Rollout and availability
The changes begin rolling out on June 23. Availability may vary by device, account, and region; check your Google Home app and official support notes for timing on your devices.
