Apple may not be done with the iPhone Air just yet.
According to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company is already planning a second-generation model. It could arrive in spring 2027 with a handful of notable upgrades, including a second rear camera.
The original iPhone Air debuted last year as Apple’s ultra-thin smartphone. It prioritised a lightweight design over some of the features found on its more expensive siblings. While the device stood out for its slim chassis, its single rear camera was widely viewed as one of its biggest compromises.
That could change with the iPhone Air 2. Gurman reports that Apple is considering adding a second rear camera, alongside improved battery life and a version of the A20 Pro chip. While details remain scarce, the additions suggest Apple is looking to address some of the trade-offs. These trade-offs came with the first model.
The report is notable for another reason: it suggests the iPhone Air could become a permanent fixture in Apple’s smartphone lineup.
Many observers saw the original Air as a stepping stone towards Apple’s long-rumoured foldable iPhone. They saw it as such rather than the beginning of a new product family. However, reports of a follow-up model indicate Apple may have bigger plans for the ultrathin form factor. This is despite the first generation seemingly attracting less attention than the company’s flagship devices.
The rumoured launch window also fits with Apple’s evolving release strategy. For years, new iPhones arrived exclusively in the autumn, but the company has recently started spreading announcements across the calendar. Last year saw Apple focus on its premium models in the autumn before introducing the iPhone 17e in the spring.
If the report proves accurate, the iPhone Air 2 could continue that trend. More importantly, it could show Apple is still searching for new ways to stand out in a smartphone market. In this market, bigger batteries, larger screens and more cameras have become the norm.
For now, the iPhone Air 2 remains firmly in rumour territory. However, a second camera alone would address one of the biggest complaints about the original model.
