Apple reportedly ‘going all out’ on cooling for its foldable iPhone

Apple’s long-rumoured foldable iPhone may still be facing production challenges, but a new leak suggests the company isn’t cutting corners when it comes to performance.

According to information shared by leaker Fixed Focus Digital on Weibo, Apple’s first foldable handset – widely referred to as the “iPhone Ultra” – is expected to feature a vapour chamber cooling system despite its unusually thin design.

This claim is notable because thermal management is often one of the biggest compromises in ultra-slim devices, particularly foldables.

While the leak suggests pre-assembly production is proving difficult, the reported launch timeline remains unchanged. Current expectations still point to a September unveiling alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, with mass production ramping up in the months leading up to launch.

The cooling upgrade could end up being one of the foldable’s most important features. Apple introduced vapour chamber cooling to the iPhone 17 Pro series, which replaced traditional graphite-based thermal systems with a more advanced solution designed to move heat away from the chipset. It can also distribute it more efficiently across the chassis, with Apple claiming that the approach delivered significantly better sustained performance during demanding workloads.

Bringing a similar system to a foldable device would suggest Apple is prioritising thermal performance despite the engineering constraints involved.

That’s particularly interesting given previous rumours suggesting the foldable iPhone may sacrifice several features found on Apple’s flagship Pro models to achieve its slim profile. For example, reports have suggested the device could omit Face ID, MagSafe, a dedicated telephoto camera, the Action Button and even a physical SIM tray.

Moreover, the latest report about durability concerns surrounding the hinge mechanism also arrives amid conflicting claims about what is slowing development. In contrast, more recent reports have suggested manufacturing yields and assembly processes may be the bigger challenge. Either way, the evidence so far suggests Apple is still working through the complexities of bringing its first foldable device to market.

If the current rumours prove accurate, the foldable iPhone will feature a 7.8-inch internal display and a 5.5-inch cover screen. It will also have Apple’s next-generation A20 chip, a C2 modem, Touch ID integrated into the power button and a dual-camera setup, with pricing expected to start at around $2,000 in the States.

For now, the more interesting takeaway is that Apple appears willing to dedicate valuable internal space to advanced cooling rather than simply chasing thinness. If true, that could help the foldable iPhone avoid one of the biggest pitfalls facing premium foldable devices today.
