I/O with big changes coming

Google is officially giving Android its own spotlight ahead of Google I/O 2026.

The Android Show: I/O Edition is set for May 12 at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET. The pre-recorded livestream will air on YouTube and will set the tone for what Google is calling “one of the biggest years for Android yet.”

The format isn’t entirely new. The Android Show first launched last year as a separate pre-I/O presentation. Google designed it to pull Android news out from under the wider Google keynote, and based on its apparent success, the show returns again this year. Sameer Samat, President of the Android Ecosystem, is expected to host once more.

The timing is deliberate, with Google I/O 2026 following a week later on May 19. While that event typically covers everything from AI to Search, Google uses The Android Show to keep the focus tightly on Android itself.

Moreover, Google has not confirmed what it plans to announce, but the company is already teasing major developments. Android 17 is currently in its final stages, with a stable release expected in June. That makes The Android Show a likely place for Google to preview features that haven’t been fully detailed yet.

There’s also growing interest around “Aluminium OS”, Google’s long-rumoured effort to merge ChromeOS and Android into a single platform. The company has already acknowledged the project in broad terms, and leaks suggest it could eventually power everything from budget laptops to premium devices.

Still, Google could use the event to clarify what Aluminium OS actually is and how it connects to Android. Crucially, the company might also announce what it will officially call it once it moves beyond its internal codename.

Beyond operating systems, Google will use the showcase to highlight broader Android ecosystem updates and upcoming features. This is especially likely as it looks to keep Android evolving alongside its wider push into AI-powered services.

What exactly will be announced is yet to be seen, but we don’t have much longer to wait.
