According to a new rumor from Korea, Samsung is now considering changing the position of the cameras in the upcoming Galaxy S27 family. It’s unclear how the design of the camera island will change, but if this pans out it will be a pretty significant redesign – Samsung smartphones have for years been associated with the current camera island placement, which you can see below.

Apparently the company’s reason to do this isn’t just cosmetic – the camera reshuffle might be required in order for Samsung to finally fit magnets to the rear of its flagship slab-style smartphones. The magnets are part of the Qi2 specification, but so far only Google has used them in the Android world (they were of course pioneered by Apple in its iPhones).

This would be a welcome change for Samsung since MagSafe accessories would work with its Galaxy S27 series devices even without cases. But of course it’s all rumors and speculation at the minute, so don’t pop the bubbly just yet.

“Due to recent cost issues”, the source of this rumor says, Samsung may put this entire project on hold and so we may only see integrated magnets in the Galaxy S28 family, depending on how RAM and storage prices evolve in the following months. We’re keeping our fingers crossed, are you?
