Phone-Maker Nothing Revives Android-to-Computer File Sharing Tool

Earlier this month, the British consumer electronics company Nothing announced a file-sharing tool called Warp. The tool was marketed as allowing you to share files, text, images and more from your Android phone to your computer with a new app and browser extension.

However, within hours of its announcement, Nothing pulled the app from the Google Play Store. The announcement blog article began showing a “this page doesn’t exist” error. About a week later, Warp returned, but not on the Google Play Store. The announcement blog also returned, with a small note about the situation:

“Nothing Warp was temporarily withdrawn to fine-tune the product following its initial release. The app is built on Google’s infrastructure and handles no user data. There are no security or privacy concerns. Warp is available in Beta for the community. If you would like to try it, feel free to download the APK and share your feedback right here on this post.”

Nothing did not immediately respond to a request for comment or clarification on why Warp was removed from the Play Store in favor of a manual, sideloading option only.

How does Nothing Warp work?

There are multiple ways to send and receive files from your phone to your computer, but it gets tricky depending on what operating system you’re using.

Cross-platform file-sharing tools aren’t unheard of, but they’ve historically been clunkier than the likes of Apple’s AirDrop. While both the Google Pixel and Samsung phones support AirDrop, Nothing Warp casts a wider net.

Warp can send files to and from any Android phone to Windows, MacOS and Linux computers using a Chromium-based browser. Once the app is installed on the phone and the extension is installed in the browser, you can send text, links, files, images and videos between the two with a few clicks. Warp uses your Google Drive storage and doesn’t store anything within the app itself.

After installation, Warp will appear as an option in the share sheet on your Android phone and can be accessed immediately by clicking the extension in the browser. When sending from your computer to your phone, you can share in two ways. First, highlight the content you want to share, right-click, and an option to “Send with Nothing Warp” will appear. Alternatively, you can click the extension and choose “Upload” to send content to your phone.

Nothing says it built the tool to make its own workflows smoother, then saw that others could benefit from it as well. While it might seem a little out of left field from Nothing to release a tool like Warp, its reasoning is justified — it should just work. That is, if you find the app on the blog post and know how to install it.
