The purple group in today’s NYT Connections puzzle might be one of the toughest ones so far this year. Read on for clues and today’s Connections answers.

The Times has a Connections Bot, like the one for Wordle. Go there after you play to receive a numeric score and to have the program analyze your answers. Players who are registered with the Times Games section can now nerd out by following their progress, including the number of puzzles completed, win rate, number of times they nabbed a perfect score and their win streak.

Hints for today’s Connections groups

Here are four hints for the groupings in today’s Connections puzzle, ranked from the easiest yellow group to the tough (and sometimes bizarre) purple group.

Yellow group hint: Think 007.

Green group hint: UK cuisine.

Blue group hint: Traditional symbols.

Purple group hint: Look for two-word phrases in which the second words have something in common.

Answers for today’s Connections groups

Yellow group: Clandestine.

Green group: British potato dishes.

Blue group: Heraldic achievements.

Purple group: Ending in modal auxiliary verbs.

The yellow words in today’s Connections

The theme is clandestine. The four answers are cloak-and-dagger, covert, hush-hush and top secret.

The green words in today’s Connections

The theme is British potato dishes. The four answers are bubble and squeak, chips, jacket potato and mash.

The blue words in today’s Connections

The theme is heraldic achievements. The four answers are coat of arms, crest, helmet and shield.

The purple words in today’s Connections

The theme is ending in modal auxiliary verbs. The four answers are Cape May, free will, grape must and tin can. (Modal auxilliary verbs are helping verbs used alongside a main verb.)
