Today at its I/O conference Google has announced the biggest upgrade to the search box in over 25 years. And yes, of course – it’s AI-powered now, what were you expecting?

One year after its debut AI Mode has over one billion monthly users, and now Google Search is upgraded with the Gemini 3.5 Flash model, also just announced at I/O. It’s the new default model for everyone globally. To complement its arrival, Google has reimagined the search box with AI.

The company says “it’s more intuitive than ever, dynamically expanding to give you space to describe exactly what you need”. It anticipates your intent and helps you formulate questions with AI-powered suggestions “that go beyond autocomplete”.

It lets you search using text, images, files, videos – even Chrome tabs can be inputs. The intelligent search box is rolling out today in all countries and languages where AI Mode is available. You can now easily ask follow-up questions from an AI Overview, and go straight into a conversational back-and-forth with AI Mode. This experience is available today across desktop and mobile, worldwide.

This summer, search agents will launch for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. These will operate in the background 24/7 to find what you need and keep you updated on what matters most to you. So, for example, if you’re apartment hunting, just tell Google your exact requirements and these agents will continuously scan for you and notify you when listings meet your needs.

Agentic booking capabilities are expanding this summer in the US to support a wide range of new tasks, including local experiences and services, with Google being able to even call businesses on your behalf for select categories like home repair, beauty, or pet care.

Finally, Personal Intelligence in AI Mode is expanding to more people in nearly 200 countries and territories in 98 languages, and there’s no subscription required. You can connect Gmail and Google Photos, and soon Google Calendar.
